With its colourful photographs and attractive design, Crabtree’s new book about the solar system will be sure to appeal to browsers. Space features many large photographs, simple text, and a good balance of information and illustration. A glossary and index round out the package. But this book could have benefitted from firmer editorial control. The author uses a few too many exclamation marks, the text describes constellations and sky maps, but neither is illustrated, and some of the illustrations could have been better. For example, the pictures of the sun and Uranus suffer from clumsy overlaying and cropping, and the picture of Pluto shows two white spheres without specifying which is Pluto. Given the competition in this area, particularly Seymour Simon’s excellent series from Mulberry Books, it’s wise to check out what the competition has to offer. Space is a good book, but better ones are available.
