Sing, Like a Hermit Thrush

by Richard G. Green

Sing, Like A Hermit Thrush has an undeniable air of authenticity. It was written by a native Canadian, contains Mohawk words and phrases, is published by a native-owned press, and has even been registered as culturally authentic by “Kanienkehaka Kanonhsonni” (the Mohawk People of one house), a native organization. Darrin Captain is a young Mohawk boy who has a strange ability to foresee the future through waking dreams. He also is having trouble with a local bully. While boxing lessons help him to cope with the bully, it takes a visit to a medicine man to help him learn to interpret his dreams correctly. In the end, his dreams help him to prevent a tragic boating accident. Although Sing, Like A Hermit Thrush lacks polish and is not as suspenseful as it might have been, it is a readable story in which the setting and characters ring true.
