When 11 puppies are born on board the Brady Lee, Mollie’s family boat, she finds each puppy uniquely charming, though her mother says one dog is enough. Mollie names the whole litter after characters in well-known children’s books (Max, Heidi, Pooh, Pippi, Charlotte) and develops a special fondness for the black runt, calling him Wilbur. Chaos follows as the puppies get into all sorts of mischief on board, until Mollie herself comes up with an ingenious plan to find homes for all. Friends and neighbours are invited to tea, and Wilbur plays a special role in convincing each that there’s room in their lives for a special little dog. Young readers will relish the madcap atmosphere but will also be satisfied with the harmonious conclusion.
Victoria author Sarah Harvey’s first book for children is an engaging retelling of a time in her own life when she too shared a boat with 11 puppies. With a straightforward yet varied text, this short, satisfying story features many interesting characters, including Mollie, a bookish and imaginative girl with enough sensitivity to know exactly who’s the best owner for each pup.
Rose Cowles (also from Victoria) has created quirky, animated, earth-toned watercolour illustrations that capture the puppies’ exuberance. Her inclusion of subtle details – such as the books that have inspired Mollie’s name choices and the peeking face of Mollie’s shy neighbour – allows readers to enjoy the book on a slightly deeper level than that of the puppies’ antics and the wacky expressions of their human companions. The page designs are varied and include spot images. Illustrations are frequently presented from odd angles and vantage points.
A good storytime choice for themes of dogs and friendship, Puppies on Board can be enjoyed as an independent read or on a one-on-one basis.
