Kids’ Vancouver

by Victoria Bushnell

What’ll we do today?” Magazine journalist Victoria Bushnell’s Kids’ Vancouver has all the answers. Not only does this practical guide to children’s activities in Vancouver cover the city’s well-known attractions and hidden treasures, it also provides a wealth of information on local services and resources for young people.

Including Lower Mainland municipalities as well as Vancouver, the guide is logically arranged so that visiting families can gain a geographical understanding of the area and its local transportation systems, then discover what to see and do, and where to eat and stay in kid-friendly establishments. A month-by-month list of annual events gives readers an idea of the variety of entertainment in Vancouver, whatever the season.

Each chapter is well researched and clearly organized by activities, accommodating a range of budgets. Attractions and destinations cited in bold type also appear in the comprehensive index. Addresses, phone numbers, and – where applicable – web sites, hours of operation, admission fees, and other specific information are included for each venue. Within each chapter, attractions are listed geographically, and useful cross-references in the text help browsers find facts quickly.

Additional chapters include an exhaustive reference source for parents and caregivers. Shopping for children, arranging kids’ parties, community services, emergency resources, even art classes are equally well researched and presented in the same approachable format.

Not for more than a dozen years has there been a guide with such clarity and practical evaluations. A fold-out colour map and 30 coupons are a welcome bonus for tourists, but even for native Vancouverites and non-parents, this resource is destined to become a well-used favourite.
