Author Sarah Tsiang and illustrator Qin Leng return with a charming picture book every bit as delightful as their well-received 2010 release, A Flock of Shoes. Their new work is a nostalgic reflection on growing up presented as a guide for newborns narrated by an exceptionally qualified source with expert credentials: a big sister.
Tsiang presents an elder sibling who is eager to dispense all sorts of sage wisdom to her baby brother. Whether warning him about their parents’ “bossy stage” or advising against using the dog as a walking-aid, she comes across as knowledgeable, rather than an irritating know-it-all.
The text finds a perfect match in Leng’s whimsical illustrations. Warm colours and soft lines complement the kindness that lies behind each piece of advice, while playful subplots introduced through the artwork will entertain observant readers. (The dog is particularly fun to follow in the story.)
This is a great read-aloud book that celebrates the joy, excitement, and love that come with the arrival of a new baby, and would make an excellent gift for any child gaining a sibling.
