Building a Solitaire Game and a Peg Board, Building Together Series, Vol.1

by Ken Ainsworth, Tina Holdcroft, illus., Rodrigo Moreno, photog.

The old adage “Never judge a book by its cover” certainly does not apply to this series. Both the title of this series, “Building Together,” and the cover photo of author Ken Ainsworth with his daughter give a good indication of the contents and the philosophy of the book – to enhance a child’s self-esteem and nurture a positive relationship between parent and child while working together on a project. This philosophy is expressed in the introduction as well as in the format of the book. Each project is introduced by a story that continues as a dialogue throughout. The dialogue serves as step-by-step instructions and shows a parent how to work safely with a child without taking over. The clear numbered instructions are enhanced by colour photographs and sidebars that give details of woodworking techniques like hammering, sanding, measuring, clamping, and squaring. Novices will find these tips invaluable. A zany cartoon bird illustrated by Tina Holdcroft adds a sense of humour to the sidebars. The practical nature of the projects – a solitaire game, a Shaker peg board for hanging clothes, a book shelf, and bicycle rack–will no doubt motivate parents to purchase this series. The design is user-friendly and the photos and short sentences will help readers to follow the instructions with ease.
