Tanya Talaga’s All Our Relations: Finding the Path Forward has been shortlisted for the 2020 British Academy’s £25,000 Nayef Al-Rodhan Prize. The prize, which is worth more than $40,000, celebrates non-fiction that contributes to global cultural understanding.

All Our Relations draws a link between the practices of colonization and the continued suffering of Indigenous children. Published in Canada in 2018 by House of Anansi Press as part of the CBC Massey Lecture series, All Our Relations was chosen from more than 100 submissions. The jury called it “a heartbreaking read, with stories of abuse and suffering not just from the past, but from everyday life in today’s world.”

The prize is awarded to work published between April 1, 2019, and March 31, 2020. All Our Relations was published in the U.K. by Scribe Publications in March 2020.

The shortlisted authors will be featured in conversation on BBC Radio 3’s Free Thinking on Sept. 29. They will also appear together in a virtual event on Oct. 1, with free tickets available through the British Academy’s website.
