The Banff Mountain Book Competition has announced its category winners for 2024. Canadian authors garnered two of the eight awards.
Jordan Abel won the prize for mountain fiction and poetry for Empty Spaces (McClelland & Stewart/Penguin Random House Canada).
Taryn Eyton won the prize for guidebooks for Backpacking on Vancouver Island: The Essential Guide to the Best Multi-Day Trips and Day Hikes (Greystone Books).
The competition celebrates all forms of mountain literature: non-fiction, fiction, poetry, environmental literature, adventure travel, image, guidebooks, article, and climbing literature.

The eight category winners are eligible for the grand prize worth $5,000, which will be announced on Oct. 31 during the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival which runs Oct. 26–Nov. 5 at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and associated venues in Banff, Alberta.
The jury members are Canadian authors Gloria Dickie and Marni Jackson, and Anthony Whittome and Irene Yee.
