Henry Tsang wins City of Vancouver Book Award, Elee Kraljii Gardiner named Vancouver’s poet laureate

Mutidisciplinary artist Henry Tsang was named the winner of the 2024 City of Vancouver Book Award for his first book, White Riot: The 1907 Anti-Asian Riots in Vancouver (Arsenal Pulp Press) at the Vancouver Writers Fest on Oct. 25. The book is based on 360 Riot Walk, a video walking tour created by Tsang.

White Riot was selected from five books shortlisted for the award, which recognizes excellence in books that contribute to the appreciation and understanding of Vancouver and its residents.

The book has also won the Dr. Edgar Wickberg Book Prize for the Best Book on Chinese Canadian History and was a finalist for the Bill Duthie Booksellers’ Prize.

At the same event, Elee Kraljii Gardiner was announced as Vancouver’s next poet laureate.
