The Giller Prize has announced the five books shortlisted for this year’s $100,000 prize.
The shortlisted books – four novels and one short story collection – were selected from a longlist announced last month.
Canadian novels and short-fiction collections published between Oct. 1, 2023 and Sept. 30, 2024 were eligible for the prize, now in its 31st year.
The shortlisted titles are:
- What I Know About You by Éric Chacour, translated by Pablo Strauss (Coach House Books)
- Curiosities by Anne Fleming (Knopf Canada/PRHC)
- Prairie Edge by Conor Kerr (Strange Light/PRHC)
- Held by Anne Michaels (McClelland & Stewart/PRHC)
- Peacocks of Instagram by Deepa Rajagopalan (Astoria/House of Anansi Press)
This year’s shortlisted titles were chosen by a jury comprised of chair and Canadian author Noah Richler, Canadian novelist and previous Giller finalist Kevin Chong, and Canadian singer-songwriter Molly Johnson.
The winner will be announced on Nov. 18.
More than 30 authors of books eligible for this year’s prize withdrew their works from consideration for the prize and are calling on the Giller Prize to pressure its lead sponsor Scotiabank to divest from Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems and cut ties with other sponsors that are “directly invested directly invested in Israel’s occupation and genocide in Palestine,” including Indigo and the Azrieli Foundation. The international jury members of the 2024 Giller Prize, Ethiopian-American novelist Dinaw Mengestu and Indian author Megha Majumdar, stepped down in July over Scotiabank’s sponsorship of the prize.
In announcing the 12-book longlist last month, the Giller Prize dropped Scotiabank from its name, a decision that prize executive director Elana Rabinovitch said was made to keep the focus on the work of the nominated authors.
