Four books covering a range of ideas and issues, from the Canadian housing crisis and mining to identity and human rights in the digital age, have been shortlisted for the 2024 Balsillie Prize for Public Policy.
The $60,000 award, now in its fourth year, is administered by the Writers’ Trust of Canada and recognizes books that further policy discussions on social, political, economic, and cultural topics. Finalists each receive $5,000.
The finalists for this year’s prize are:
- Gregor Craigie for Our Crumbling Foundation: How We Solve Canada’s Housing Crisis (Random House Canada/Penguin Random House Canada)
- Christopher Pollon for Pitfall: The Race to Mine the World’s Most Vulnerable Places (Greystone Books)
- M.G. Vassanji for Nowhere, Exactly: On Identity and Belonging (Doubleday Canada/PRHC)
- Wendy H. Wong for We, the Data: Human Rights in the Digital Age (The MIT Press)

The winner will be announced on Nov. 26.
