Illustrator Dena Seiferling has won the 2022 Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award.
Each year, IBBY Canada gives the $1,000 award to a Canadian illustrator for “outstanding artistic talent” in a Canadian picture book. Seiferling won for her work on Eric Fan’s Night Lunch (Tundra Books).
The jury comprised of Heather Doepner, Julie Girard-Tarif, and Joanne Schwartz said, “Seiferling’s sumptuous, sepia-toned illustrations, with softly, textured lines, reveal all the nuance of the shadowy nocturnal setting, creating a dream-like atmosphere” and “the stunning illustrations bring a richness to the midnight tale that creates a mesmerizing visual world.”
The two honour books selected were Kumo: the bashful cloud, by Kyo Maclear and Nathalie Dion, ill. (Tundra Books) and Lizzy and the Cloud, by The Fan Brothers (Simon & Schuster Canada).
