The winners of the 20th annual Doug Wright Awards were announced in Toronto on Saturday, May 11, in conjunction with the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. The annual awards for Canadian cartooning honour excellence in comics (including webcomics) and graphic novels published in English.
The winners were selected from a shortlist announced in April.
The Doug Wright Award for best book
- Emily Carroll, A Guest in the House (First Second/Macmillan)
The Egghead: The Doug Wright Award for best kids’ book
- Naseem Hrab and Kelly Collier, ill., Otis and Peanut (Owlkids Books)
The Nipper: The Doug Wright Award for emerging talent
- Vincy Lim, “When She Set Fire to My Friend’s Houses” and “When I was a kid i was taught how to die. Now that I’m an adult I’m learning how to live. (I love you.) (Self-published)
The Pigskin Peters: The Doug Wright Award for best small- or micro-press book
- Tyler Landry, Old Caves (Uncivilized Books)
Comic book artist Maurice Vellekoop and publisher Deni Loubert – founder of the U.S.-based Renegade Press and co-founder of Canadian indie comic book publisher Aardvark-Vanaheim – were named this year’s inductees to Giants of the North.
The awards event also paid tribute to cartoonist Joe Matt and Phyllis Wright Thomas, widow of Doug Wright, who both died in 2023.
The Collected Doug Wright (1963–1980), a second volume of Wright’s collected works, was launched at the event as well.
