2023 SWCC Book Awards announced

2023 SWCC Book Awards

The Science Writers and Communicators of Canada announced the winners of the 2023 SWCC Book Awards on Sept. 17 at the association’s annual AGM.

The prizes recognize outstanding contributions to science writing by Canadians.

The winner of the SWCC General Book Award was Shohini Ghose for Her Space, Her Time: How Trailblazing Women Scientists Decoded the Hidden Universe (MIT Press).

The SWCC Children’s Book Award was won by Polar: Wildlife at the Ends of the Earth by L. E. Carmichael and Byron Eggenschwiler (ill.) (Kids Can Press).

The Paradigm Prize for underrepresented perspectives in science writing, given to a first-time author, an author/illustrator from an underrepresented background, and/or work published by a small press or independent publisher, was awarded to Karen Pinchin for Kings of Their Own Ocean: Tuna, Obsession, and the Future of Our Seas (Knopf Canada).

Winners of the general and children’s book awards receive $1,000 and the Paradigm Prize winner receives $500.
