A new novel from Order of Canada recipient Tim Wynne-Jones arrives in October. The Emperor of Any Place (Random House Canada) is described as a “pulse-quickening mystery evoking the elusiveness of truth and the endurance of wars passed from father to son.” Toronto-based theoretical physicist Kevin Sands marks his authorial debut with The Blackthorn Key (S&S Canada), a middle-grade novel in which a young apothecary’s apprentice must solve riddles, decipher codes, and save the world. No biggie. The latest instalment of Jennifer Lloyd’s popular series about a jungle detective is Murilla Gorilla and the Missing Mop. Illustrated by Jacqui Lee, the book will publish with Simply Read in October. Liam O’Donnell launches a new series, illustrated by Montreal illustrator Aurélie Grand, with Owlkids in October. West Meadow Detectives: The Case of the Snack Snatcher introduces readers to Myron and his clue crew sidekicks Hajrah and Danielle. In Winnipeg author Stephanie Tromly’s Trouble is a Friend of Mine (Kathy Dawson Books, Aug.), Zoe Webster finds herself dragged into the search for a kidnapper by the odd (or is that oddly attractive?) Philip Digby.

UP AND DOWN

Megan Crewe concludes her Earth and Sky trilogy with A Sky Unbroken (Razorbill Canada, Oct.), in which Skylar and a small group of Earthlings, having been captured by the Enforcers, find themselves on display in the Kemyates’ human zoo. Eric Walters adds a sequel to 2011’s End of Days with Regenesis (Tundra, Sept.), which follows a group of survivors trying to live underground after an asteroid strikes Earth. Broadcaster, author-illustrator, and funny guy Kevin Sylvester takes a sci-fi turn with Minrs (S&S Canada), in which a 12-year-old boy and his friends seek refuge in mining tunnels when their asteroid space colony is attacked.
