Celebrating the life and work of Toronto lit-punk icon Daniel Jones

Tonight, Coach House Books and Three O’Clock Press are celebrating Toronto lit-punk icon Daniel Jones (The Shop, 1566 Queen Street West, 7:30 p.m). This story on the reissue of two of Jones’s books ran in Q&Q OMNI on May 16.

When he was alive, Daniel Jones had a small but hardcore following. Now, 17 years after his death from suicide, the Toronto literary and punk icon is being celebrated with reissues of two out-of-print titles.

Jones published nine works before his death: the novel Obsessions (Mercury Press), a book of poetry, The Brave Never Write Poetry (Coach House Press), and seven chapbooks. Two books, the novel 1978 (Rush Hour Revisions) and a collection of linked short stories, The People One Knows (Mercury Press), were published posthumously. Jones was also a literary critic, editor, and publisher, co-founding Streetcar Editions with Robyn Gillam.

Three O’Clock Press approached Jones’s literary executor, Jeffrey Canton, to publish 1978, originally released in 1998, at the same time Coach House Press was reissuing The Brave Never Write Poetry. Instead of competing for attention, the two Toronto publishers are taking advantage of the coincidence and collaborating on a launch, happening May 18 in Toronto.
