Cover to cover: Marijke Friesen on designing The Umbrella Mender

The Umbrella Mender

2. Reading the novel, I was captivated by the scenes of hospital staff examining X-rays of TB patients’ lungs. The “clouds” of TB and the “clear skies” of healthy lungs were so visually engaging. I tried to incorporate an image of a lung X-ray. I also wanted to bring in the Northern landscape, mixing imagery of the human body and the natural landscape through which it travels. The response was positive, although there was concern that the photograph of the tree looked too modern.
