- This year saw a surprise $5,000 increase in the amount of the TD Canadian Children's Literature Award to $30,000, making it the richest prize for a Canadian children's book. The award went to Trilby Kent for her novel Stones for My Father (Tundra Books). Accepting her prize, Kent noted that, despite the doom-and-gloom attitude pervasive in publishing, the future looks pretty bright from where I'm standing.

- The John Spray Mystery Award, presented by the man himself (who amused the audience with the revelation that a summer-camp reading experience transformed him from wanting to be a Hardy Boy to wanting to be with Nancy Drew), was awarded to Rob Mills for Charlie's Key (Orca Book Publishers).
