Out of the Everywhere: Tales for a New World

by Jan Andrews, Simon Ng, illus.

In the foreword to this folk tale collection, Ontario-based author and storyteller Jan Andrews recounts her early inquiries into her origins. In reply to the question “Where did I come from?” her mother would say, “Out of the everywhere and into here.” This sibylline reply stayed with her over the years, coming to represent, among other things, her vision of Canadian cultural identity. Here, in these 10 stories from around the globe, the experiences of new immigrants to North America posit a vision of an ethical, compassionate New World.

You may have initial fears (as I did) that this vision is going to be realized by an international cast of Pollyannas. For instance, in the second story, a Greek tale called “Maria’s Gift,” the heroine’s unwavering faith, cheer, and gratitude – though they’re intrinsic to the plot – become a little stifling. In Andrews’ source tale (all sources are listed at the end of the book) the sweetness is counterbalanced by the antagonist’s grisly death, but here, she is simply covered in ashes. Fortunately, the collection progresses into a range of moods, and Andrews’ skilful narration does justice to all. The middle two stories, “The Pincoya’s Child” (Chilean origin) and “The Couple’s Journey” (Cree), subtly advise letting go of things when it’s time. “The Fly” (Vietnamese) and “Ti-Jean and the Calf” (from the Brothers Grimm) gleefully champion the underdog and celebrate ingenuity.

The sophisticated paintings by Toronto-based artist Simon Ng are right on the mark. The contours give the illustrations a contemporary, edgy feel while the dark, rich colours and shadows render them dreamlike at the same time. The high production quality of this book and its variety of well-told tales make this a worthy addition to any folklore collection.
