Authors and booksellers among 2023 Order of Canada recipients

The Governor General of Canada announced 85 new appointments to the Order of Canada on June 30. The list of appointees includes a number of writers and booksellers.

Named as Officers of the Order of Canada are poet and author lax̌lax̌tkʷ Christine Armstrong of Penticton, B.C., whose citation noted her leadership in revitalizing the Silyx Okanagan Indigenous language, and children’s author and bookseller Sheree Lynn Fitch of River John, Nova Scotia.

Author Susan Swan of Toronto and author and journalist Charles William Gordon of Ottawa are appointed as Members of the Order of Canada. Former booksellers Holly Susan McNally and Paul McNally of Victoria, B.C., who founded and owned the McNally-Robinson Booksellers chain until 2012, are also named as members, as are academics and authors Beverly Janet Lemire and Sarah Alexandra Carter, both of Edmonton.

The investiture ceremony for appointees will take place at a later date.
