A long-standing Coles bookstore in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, will not be re-opening its doors.

The Gateway Mall location shut down in March as part of the mandated COVID-19 lockdowns. According to the local city website paNOW, a sign posted on the Coles storefront says, “after more than 38 years in our community, we regret to announce that this location will be closed effective immediately.”

Coles, which began as a family-run business in 1940, merged with SmithBooks in 1995 to form the Chapters chain. In 2001, Chapters merged with Indigo, becoming the country’s largest book retailer. Although Indigo’s current business strategy is focused on developing “cultural department stores for booklovers,” as of December 2019, there were still 111 small-format stores operating under the Coles, Indigospirit, and The Book Company brands across Canada.

Indigo CEO Heather Reisman recently spoke to BNN Bloomberg about the company’s efforts to secure a government-funded break on rents for their mall stores. The retailer has been experiencing financial fallout and continued stock drops as it slowly prepares to re-open some of its stores.
