Nanaimo, B.C.-based writer Greg Brown has two stories on this year’s longlist for the Writers’ Trust/McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize. Thirteen stories in total were included on the longlist, which was announced on Aug. 7.
The $10,000 prize is awarded to the best short story or excerpt first published in a Canadian literary journal in 2017. All 13 nominees will be included in the annual anthology The Journey Prize Stories 30, which will be published by McClelland & Stewart on Sept. 25.
Both of Brown’s stories, the surreal “Bear” and bittersweet “Love,” were first published in the Vancouver-based journal Pulp Literature. Other publications with two nominations include The New Quarterly, This Magazine, and the CVC Anthology Series.

The contenders will be narrowed down to three stories by the jury – comprised of writers Sharon Bala, Kerry Clare, and Zoey Leigh Peterson – when the shortlist is announced Sept. 12. The winner of the Journey Prize will be announced Nov. 7 at the Writers’ Trust Awards at Toronto’s Glenn Gould Studio.
