Is there anything better than a fresh box of crayons when you’re a kid? For little Evan, the first crayon to snap is heartbreaking, until he realizes that instead of one brown crayon, now he has two. Hazel Hutchins’s text and Dušan Petričić’s illustrations work in tandem to tell the story of how one little boy finds joy in discovery (learning about how colours combine to make other colours) and imagination (where will that brightly hued paper airplane take him?). Told in a way that will appeal to kids while still imparting an important lesson in making the best of a sad situation, Snap! is a delightful book.
